Communication and Myth

This thesis explores the relationships between communication and mythology in Joseph Cambell's ideas of myth and in C.S. Lewis's work The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe. Joseph Campbell emphasized the similarities of both content and patterns of the different cultural myths he studied. He called for the creation of modern myths that embody the important characteristics he outlined in his works. Campbell also asked the reader to recognize the new mythologies being created in modern times and their similarities to the content and patterns of ancient myths. This thesis derives criteria from Cambell's ideas of mythology for evaluating modern myths, and it exemplifies Lewis's work as a modern myth. Cambell's definitions of creative myth, mythological functions, and the stages of a hero myth are primary in developing the criteria and in relating myth to communication concepts. Mythical stories touch upon each level of communication from intrapersonal aspects to intercultural exchanges, in the sense that these stories can be defined as communicated views of symbolic and spiritual reality experienced by humans. Finally, this thesis explores the communication of views of reality through myth by examining how C.S. Lewis's life experiences are reflected in his writings--specifically The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe.
